Telegram’s Digital Collectibles Attract Scammers as Values Surge
Telegram’s rare digital gifts and usernames, some now valued at over $100,000, have become targets for scammers and extortionists, according to founder Pavel Durov. The messaging platform’s collectibles, initially purchased for nominal sums, have appreciated sharply, drawing malicious actors seeking to exploit their newfound worth.
Durov reported instances of blackmail, with scammers threatening to leak personal data or harm reputations unless users surrender their digital assets. Certain groups have allegedly built operations around these tactics, publishing damaging content only to remove it for a fee. The practice, described as 'illegal and immoral,' has prompted calls for affected users to report incidents directly.
